A man has died after falling from the world-famous Tate Modern art museum in London, officials said Friday.
London’s Metropolitan Police received reports at 10:45 a.m. local time of a man who had “fallen from” the museum, the department said in a statement. The man died at the scene after city medical responders tried to saved him, police said. The museum is located along London’s River Thames, in the central part of the city.
Police said they do not think there was anything suspicious about the man’s death, although it was surprising.
“The death is currently being treated as unexpected but is not thought to be suspicious,” the department said in a statement.
In a statement, the museum said they are sad to report the death, describing the man as “a member of the public.”
“We have closed the gallery for the day as a mark of respect,” the museum’s press office told USA TODAY. “All our thoughts are with the person’s family and friends at this time.”
The scene of the man’s death is cordoned off, police said, and officials are working to notify his family. His name and age were not released by authorities.
The Tate Modern, located in central London, is one of the most visited art museums in the world, and contains much of the modern art owned by the United Kingdom.
The impressive museum building is located just steps from the South Bank of London’s winding River Thames, next-door to Shakespeare’s Globe theater.
Besides its massive size, the Tate Modern also features sweeping, iconic views of London from its observation deck on the tenth floor of the Blavatnik Building, also called Level 10.
