Highland Elementary and Reedsport Community Charter schools’ students will put paint brushes to work Thursday and Friday as they complete a community mural.
Under the guidance of Oregon Coast School of Art’s artist in residence Paul Blumenthal, they’re putting a youthful touch on the underwater themed project going up on a wall in the school.
Blumenthal, an architect by day and artist by passion says he’s created art professionally since 1987 with a focus on figurative and abstract work.
Although he lives in Montana, he says he’s always loved the ocean and has always been a surfer which played into the theme.
“They wanted a volunteer activity, so I said, ‘Well, I’ve done murals before with children’ – in Israel, and I did them in Helena. The mural concept is the land/ocean interface. Gardiner is the bottom of the ocean. All the animals, creatures, birds, fish, everything is swimming above. So you see the place and then the association with our ocean,” said Blumenthal.
Blumenthal says he hopes to see the children paint with freedom.
During his month long residency at OCSA, which ends on November 3, he’s lived in a classroom which doubled as his studio.
Following the residency, he’ll return to his full-time job in Helena as a project manager for the state of Montana.
