The Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, with the support of Saratoga Arts, is pleased to announce the launch of an inspiring online art exhibit and auction. The exhibit launched on January 1, 2024, in celebration of the birth date of every Thoroughbred horse foaled in 2024 in the Northern Hemisphere. The auction bidding will begin on February 1 and will continue through February 29, providing a unique opportunity for art enthusiasts and philanthropists to contribute to The TRF Second Chances Program and Second Chances Prison ART, both at Pleasant Valley State Prison.
The initiative took root when incarcerated individuals in The Second Chance Prison Art Program at Pleasant Valley State Prison (PVSP) expressed a desire to support The TRF Second Chances Program at PVSP. Farm manager, Heidi Richards, facilitated a visit to different yards with two horses and four goats. This allowed those who had never encountered a horse before to connect with these majestic animals. Heidi Richards shared, “Some of the Incarcerated Individuals had never seen a horse in person, and some of them felt like if it wasn’t for the TRF program at PVSP, they would’ve never seen a horse.”
The online art exhibit and auction features artwork created by the incarcerated individuals in the Second Chance Prison ART Program, showcasing their creativity and commitment to giving back. This program was created after tireless work from Richards. Proceeds from the auction will directly benefit the TRF Second Chances Program, supporting its mission to provide retired Thoroughbred racehorses with sanctuary and offering incarcerated individuals in The Second Chances Program the opportunity to learn valuable skills through vocational training. Proceeds will also benefit the Second Chance Prison ART Program and allow for new works to be created with the goal of raising more funds.
One of the participating individuals expressed a profound sentiment, stating, “This is a way to give back to society, what we’ve taken.” The TRF is excited to showcase the pieces and talents of the incarcerated individuals.
This was all made possible by the support of Saratoga Arts. Providing the TRF with the online auction platform, their generosity and willingness to collaborate has been pivotal. Without their support, the art exhibit and auction may never have come to fruition.
The TRF invites the public to join in this meaningful initiative by participating in the online art exhibit and auction. Together, we can make a difference by Saving Horses, Changing Lives.
