This painting is made of dots! Take a close look at Georges-Pierre Seurat’s “Evening, Honfleur.”
Seurat spent the summer of 1886 in the resort town on the northern coast of France called Honfleur. The region’s turbulent seas and rugged shorelines long attracted artists, but Seurat’s evening view is hushed and still.
The artist used a technique called “Pointillism” to make this scene. All the forms you see are made of small dots of pure color that merge into shapes and remain separate particles, generating a magical shimmer.
See Seurat’s painting, on view in our fifth-floor galleries.
