“My painting is based on the fact that only what can be seen there is there… What you see is what you see.” — Frank Stella
We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Frank Stella.
In 1970, MoMA presented the first retrospective of Stella when he was just 33 years old—the youngest artist ever to have a retrospective at the Museum. The exhibition covered roughly a decade’s worth of Stella’s paintings and drawings, foregrounding his pioneering shaped canvases and emphasis on serial structures. Instead of painting something recognizable, Stella’s painting was about the act of painting, and its result.
