Unusual characters frequent the world created by artist Barry McGee.
Barry McGee got his start in the 1980s making graffiti under the moniker Twist. Since that time the artist has become a major figure in the bicoastal youth subculture that thrives on skateboarding, graffiti, surfing, punk rock, and other forms of street culture that influence the visual arts, music, fashion, and literature.
In “Drypoint on Acid,” McGee used collage elements from his vast collection of old industrial printed papers, which he embellished with his own images.
McGee worked on this portfolio with master printer and publisher Jacob Samuel who has brought etchings into the 21st century through collaborations with more than 60 contemporary artists.
Discover how Samuel brings artists’ visions to life in a new exhibition, #NewGround, on view now at MoMA → mo.ma/newground
