Joan Cardona i Lladós nos ofrece en este dibujo una imagen totalmente representativa de su estilo. Considerado como uno de los artistas de mayor renombre y fama internacional, sus elegantes y glamurosas ilustraciones parisinas dieron nombre al “estilo Cardona” en la época de la Belle Époque. Desde 1900, cuando se instaló en París, hasta 1914, cuando la Primera Guerra Mundial le devolvió a Barcelona, fue uno de los ilustradores más reconocidos de la capital francesa. En esta ocasión, Cardona plasma una imagen elegante, naturalista y espontánea, fiel reflejo de la vida social parisina. Siguiendo su particular estilo, Cardona sitúa a los personajes en el contexto de un café. En primer plano, una joven vestida a la moda de la época, con un sombrero de plumas, conversa en una mesa en la que descansan su bolso, flores y el cóctel que está tomando con un caballero elegantemente vestido. Detrás de las figuras principales hay marcos con fotografías que representan diferentes situaciones de la vida parisina, un recurso típico del pintor modernista, que prefería poblar los fondos con figuras secundarias para ofrecer una visión clara de los ambientes de ocio en los que ambientaba sus escenas.
Formado en la Escola de Belles Arts de la Lonja y en la Academia Baixeras de Barcelona, amplió sus estudios en París, donde se estableció durante varios años. En la capital francesa formó grupo con los mejores ilustradores de la época, como Cappiello, Sem, Steinlen y Roubille. Pintor y dibujante, desarrolló una importante actividad en el campo de la ilustración, colaborando con revistas españolas como “El Gato Negro” e “Hispania”, y en las francesas “Le Rire” y “Simplicissimus”. Destaca su colaboración con “Jugend”, la revista insignia del modernismo vienés, el Jugendstil. Durante su etapa parisina, Cardona alcanzó fama internacional gracias a sus dibujos a pluma, caracterizados por la nitidez del trazo y los fuertes valores expresivos. Por el contrario, en su pintura subordina la línea al color, con tonos cálidos en sus primeros años y gamas frías en su madurez. Sus cuadros, de gran fuerza expresiva y denso empaste, definen el protagonismo de la mujer, que se perfila sobre fondos vibrantes, casi abstractos, en un estilo que le acerca a Anglada Camarasa. En 1897 fue premiado en el concurso organizado por la Academia Mariana de Lleida. Expone en París en los Salones de Otoño y en los Salones de la Sociedad Nacional, obteniendo en ambos el título de “societaire”. Participó en las Exposiciones Internacionales de Bellas Artes de Barcelona de 1907 y 1929. Está representado en el Museo del Luxemburgo de París
