Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes is Captain America in alternate Marvel Cinematic Universe artwork. As a man out of time, Bucky has gone through so much in his time in the franchise, and yet, it seems like Marvel Studios is just scratching the surface with regard to his personal narratives. Bucky is poised to play a bigger role in the MCU moving forward, but it’s curious if part of his future involves ever wielding Captain America’s shield.
Regardless of what the MCU’s plan is in the Multiverse Saga, chocolaton from Tumblr visualizes what Bucky may look like as the universe’s Captain America. Check out the images below:
The collage offers a variety of looks for Bucky if he gets to wield Captain America’s shield in the MCU. Some of his costumes even incorporate details from his signature look, including his long hair and metal arm.
Will Bucky Barnes Ever Become Captain America In The MCU?
After Bucky’s presumed death in the 1940s, he re-emerged in modern times with the revelation that HYDRA brainwashed him to be the organization’s operative known as the Winter Soldier. Since being saved, Bucky has been focused on his healing journey, which includes making amends for his past crimes and even going to therapy, as seen in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Before Steve Rogers passed the Captain America shield to Sam Wilson at the end of Avengers: Endgame, there was hope that he was going to give it to Bucky instead.
There’s precedence in the comic books for this. However, while the MCU is inspired by Marvel Comics, Kevin Feige and his creative team tend to carve their own storylines on the screen. At this point, the chances of Bucky becoming Captain America are very low to none. Narratively, this makes the most sense moving forward. Marvel Studios is just starting to establish Sam as the next Captain America, and it’s counterproductive for the shield to change hands again in the near future. In any case, Bucky is set for his next role in the MCU — the leader of the Thunderbolts.
Despite the prestige that comes with wielding the Captain America shield, it’s arguably best for Bucky not to step into the shoes of the next Star-Spangled Avenger. The role comes with massive pressure, something that Sam knows full well as he fully assumes his position as Steve’s rightful successor. For now, it’s best that he focuses on rehabilitating, and doing good as the leader of the Thunderbolts can be a therapeutic experience.
