HYBLA VALLEY, VA — The Southeast Fairfax Development Corporation is doing its part to make the parklet introduced last year at Mount Vernon Plaza into a community-oriented space.
The organization will host an Art & Literature Wonderland event on Saturday, Oct. 14 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Mount Vernon Plaza parklet, 7698 Richmond Hwy., Alexandria, VA. The event, intended to showcase the arts in the Richmond Highway corridor, is free to attend.
“The SFDC is dedicated to fostering a sense of place for the Richmond Hwy Community,” said Evan Kaufman, executive director of the Southeast Fairfax Development Corporation. “Through such events, we not only spotlight our local talent but also create vibrant spaces that encourage community interaction.”
The event will include an appearance by Old Town Mystery series author John Wasowicz, who features Mount Vernon and Alexandria in his books. Wasowicz will be signing copies of his six-book series at a special rate for the event.
Other activities include a workshop for aspiring writers to write a scene set along the Richmond Highway corridor, watercolor painting and scrapbooking sessions led by two local artists, and chalk art for children.
Attendees are encouraged to support local restaurants amid the event.
Southeast Fairfax Development Corporation, a nonprofit that works to revitalize the Richmond Highway corridor with economic development, helped Mount Vernon Plaza’s parklet be created. Shopping center owner Federal Realty worked with the nonprofit to create the community space for visitors to use.
