We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Pope.L
Throughout his career, Pope.L posed provocative questions about a culture consumed with success yet riven by social, racial, and economic conflict.
An agitator and humorist, Pope.L used his own body to examine division and inequality on the streets and stages of New York City and in the more rustic environs of Maine, where he taught for 20 years—all “to reinvent what’s beneath us, to remind us where we all come from.” Based in Chicago for the past decade, he conceived his actions, installations, paintings, and objects “to make troubled culture.”
Farewell to the “fisherman of social absurdity.”
Pope.L’s “Eracism (version 8b)” (2000) is currently on view in Artist’s Choice: Grace Wales Bonner—Spirit Movers.
