Immerse yourself in shimmering video animations and a deeply resonant soundscape in “Alexandre Estrela: Flat Bells,” a new commission now on view in MoMA’s Kravis Studio.
Estrela’s images are “not just [to] be watched, but rather to be unfolded.” In “Flat Bells,” a complex choreography of objects, images, and shadows is dictated by the ever-changing rhythm of an algorithmic system designed by the artist. Drawing on a long history of self-generating artworks, from automated computer graphics to kinetic sculpture, Estrela’s immersive multimedia environment considers forms of artificial life and timely questions of machine agency and human perception.
See Estrela’s first New York exhibition at MoMA through January 7.
