Artists, or teams of artists asked to include: ‘compass or weather vane’ in their design submission
Proposals are being sought for a Lickman Road Roundabout art project that will feature a compass or weather vane in the design.
A request for proposals (RFP) process was launched last month by city hall officials, for what will become City of Chilliwack’s next piece of public art, with a project budget of $70,000.
Artists, or teams of artists are being asked to include: a “kinetic compass and/or weather vane” in the design meant to create a visual focal point in the centre button of the Lickman Road Roundabout, according to RFP documents.
The goal of this latest project is to help the city meet its public art program objective “to enrich the visual environment” of the community, “by placing works of art in strategic locations throughout the city.”
In this location the artwork stands to make a strong “first impression,” of Chilliwack since the Lickman Road roundabout “hosts a significant amount of local traffic,” and will be highly visible from Highway 1, the RFP documents say.
The artwork design will have “its four due points accurately displayed, and ideally be decorated with vignettes of local activities,” according to RFP documents.
The objective is creating “a piece of public art that is visually appealing from all approaches but will not impede traffic flow in any manner, including through the use of reflective material.”
The artwork completion date is October 2024.
Bidding is set to close on the Lickman Roundabout art project, on Nov. 29 at 3 p.m. with a budget not to exceed $70,000, for everything including artist fees, fabrication, insurance, materials, engineering and more.
