“Forget yourself. Become one with eternity. Become part of your environment.” — Yayoi Kusama
Yayoi Kusama left Japan and moved to New York City in 1958. Soon after, she began producing her Infinity Nets series of paintings, including this, where she played with the notion of infinite repetition and infinite space.
Her use of thick, intricately webbed paint hints at something personal and obsessive. Her nets can be seen as a material form of the patterns that Kusama experiences in hallucinations, a condition that has afflicted her since childhood.
See the painting, on view now in our fourth-floor galleries.
