Towns along York County’s popular Heritage Rail Trail will receive a total of $100,000 to bring public art and other revitalization efforts to those communities, officials announced at a news conference Friday at Ruins Park in Glen Rock.
The effort is called the Creative Communities Initiative. Creative Communities is a designation from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, said Katie Mahoney, chief marketing and business development officer for the York County Economic Alliance & Downtown Inc − which has created York County Trail Towns to boost tourism, recreation and the arts along the rail trail.
The concept is to use creative spaces to attract users off the trail and into the towns to explore and enjoy those communities.
Mahoney said the money will be used in $25,000 installments over four years to fund public art installations and creative events in trail towns.
She said the Economic Alliance has created a group to evaluate potential projects. The working group includes members from the Trail Towns Action Teams, and a few countywide stakeholders, including Gwen Loose of the York County Rail Trail Authority, Mike Fobes of York County Parks, Andrea Ryan of Explore York and Kelly Gibson of Cultural Alliance of York County.
How will the money be used?
The group has not yet determined specific projects yet, Mahoney said, but initial ideas include funding a more cost effective winter event to replace FestivICE, such as working with artists to commission lighted sculptures along the way similar to the rail trail lights event in Charlotte, lighting up store fronts, and holiday or other themed lights in the trail towns.
Other ideas:
- Funding murals in the trail towns
- Funding creative window painting for vacant storefronts −similar to what some storefronts have done in downtown York.
- Adding sculptures or other creative arts projects along the trail.
